Almost three years ago, I came cross an Instagram account that inspired me to start a blog. It took off slowly because my time after work was limited and I had no time to write. However, at the end of last year, I decided to continue with the vision and I now manage to squeeze in more time for blogging. Since then, I have slowly seen the blog grow and I now manage to be more consistent.
If you’re familiar with blogging, you know how much work it really is! If you aren’t, there are so many details behind every blog post and blog design. It’s definitely hard work and time-consuming, but for some crazy reason, I love it. Juan? Well he goes along with the flow and helps me out with minor details that relate to the blog and social media.
Because of all the hard work that’s been put into this blog thus far, it makes me happy to say we we’re nominated for the Liebster Award given to bloggers by bloggers. Every award, as small as it may be, is a small stepping stone but a big milestone towards the bigger goals we have in mind for our blog.
We were nominated by Beth at Adventuring the Great Wide Somewhere. On her blog, Beth shares her adventures in a diary format. She shares photos and her favorite spots for readers to enjoy! Thank you for the nomination Beth!
What is the Liebster Award?
The Liebster Award is an online award given by bloggers to bloggers since 2011. This is a recognition of their contribution to the blogging community, in this case the travel community. No trophy is involved. It is simply passed on and helps promote and support fellow friends who blog. This is a great way to recognize the hard work of fellow online friends. Once nominated, the award also motivates you to keep working hard and doing what you love and enjoy.
Here are the rules of the game:
- Display the award on your blog and write a post about the award.
- Thank the person who nominated you and post a link to their blog. Tell the reader a little about your nominator.
- Answer the questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you.
- Nominate up to 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award.
- Give the nominees 11 questions to answer on their blog.
- List these rules in your post.
- Notify the nominees of the Liebster Award and ask if they would be happy to accept? If so, send them a link to your post.
Is there someone who inspired you to begin traveling or to begin blogging? This could be a friend of family member, a fellow blogger, or even a TV personality.
Edith: Travel has always been something I love but the day my vision for travel became bigger, was the day I came across Brooke Sawards Instagram account. Having just moved to California in 2014 and in the midst of a depression after a miscarriage, I got inspired by Brooke to start exploring the new state I was living in to help me cope with loss. Her pictures created a wanderlust that exploded inside me. Since then, California was not enough. We visited a few more places and now even have plans for a round-the-world trip. Because of her, we started an Instagram account and a blog to document our travels. Her blog posts, videos, and pictures are perfection!
Juan: My wife inspired me to start traveling. She taught me how fun it can be to explore new places and she inspired me to experience new adventures.
Having seen the world, what one place has made the biggest impression on you, good or bad?
Edith: The biggest impression I’ve had while traveling came on my first visit to Mexico. I hadn’t visited my birth country since I was a child, and there I was at 15 seeing the reality of how people struggle to make a living in this country. I realized how fortunate I was and how giving can be a bigger blessing than receiving. Although it’s easy to complain about how pushy vendors can be with tourists, I completely understand why. Juan and I make it a point to support family businesses instead of corporate ones by eating and shopping from locals.
Juan: One place that had a big impression on me was Cancun because I saw the most beautiful sand. The sand helped make a nice and beautiful reflection of the ocean. One place I’ll never forget!
If you could pick just one place to settle down, where would it be and why?
Edith: We’ve come to a point in our lives in which we’re not completely sure what we want for our future in terms of settling. However, Tucson, Arizona is where our family is. As bad as the heat may be, we also love the small town-big city feel and the cheap cost of living. Most of all, after living just outside L.A., we love how little traffic there is!
Juan: I think I could settle down in Costa Rica. Costa Rica had the most humble and helpful people I have encountered thus far. I also felt very safe in this country and experienced the most beautiful jungle I’ve seen.
Share one piece of advice for those just beginning to travel.
Edith:We aren’t experts in travel but our advice is to be extremely careful with your budget. There are ways to save and all those dreams to see places are definitely attainable. Look for what things you can cut out of your budget that will help you reach your goals. We always prioritize! We look for deals, cut out spending in other areas, and explore our city when we can’t travel far!
Juan: Don’t be scared to start traveling! You will discover new adventures that will change the way you see life.
Tell us about your favorite meal while on the road.
Edith: I may be biased, but hands down Mexico has the best food! We live outside L.A and we will make the 2 hour drive down to Tijuana, Mexico (border of San Diego) just for tacos!
Juan: I can die for Mexican food!
Which of your blog posts are you the most proud of, and why?
Edith: Our blog is fairly new. We are still discovering our writing style, how to edit pictures, how to reach an audience, and how to make time for it all. It’s more time-consuming than it seems. I can say that from these, the hardest is reaching an audience. Because of that, I feel most proud of our Los Cabos post because of the comment engagement we reached. It took a lot of work to get our post to be seen!
Juan: I’m proud of all of Edith’s posts. I’ve only helped with photos so far and with providing money for trips haha!
How do you prepare for a trip?
Edith: Our travel style is mostly luxury on a budget so I go into intense research on how to save money on accommodation. If we will be doing full day excursions, we find budget friendly places to rest our heads. On some of our trips though, we leave one or two days to fully enjoy and choose nicer options. Usually places with nice beach front views are what we prefer! We also research city passes, check flight deals, and check for free things to do in cities. We are also open to AirBnbs in the future.
Juan: We save money, look for flight deals, and check what we will need before heading out.
If you had the freedom (financially and otherwise) to go anywhere and do anything, what would your dream vacation look like?
Edith: If we had the financial freedom, we would definitely travel European countries for long periods of time. Spain, Italy, France, and the Netherlands top our list for romantic-like cities to explore. However, we love nature and beaches and places like Thailand and Mexico seem like a perfect fit for us! Cheaper too!
Juan: My dream vacation would be to travel slow to enjoy each place better. It would be nice to travel with no worries about money!
What has been your favorite travel moment?
Edith: Do we only get to pick one!? I’m still deciding if swimming in a cenote, encountering monkeys in the rain forest, lounging in a hot spring, hiking a volcano, swimming in the clear Caribbean Sea, or if having the most memorable hotel stay is my favorite travel moment! Which to pick!?
Juan: Walking Manuel Antonio park in Costa Rica has been my favorite travel moment so far. It has the most beautiful views and we encountered all kinds of animals. We had a great time looking at monkeys!
How has blogging changed the way in which you travel?
Edith: Blogging has changed how I travel because now I’m always in search of the best view so I can capture great pictures for the blog. My camera is with me at all times!. I now travel paying attention to golden hour, waiting for sunsets, and looking for less crowded places and times in the day. I’m not the most fashionable person around, but I now try to skip clothing with logos for better pictures. Lastly, I research the best places for photography in each city. It’s funny how blogging has changed my perspective about these small details.
What destination are you most looking forward to visiting in 2017?
Edith: We have HUGE plans for this year! First off, we are embarking on a new journey of taking a few months off to travel the world. If all goes as planned, we will be headed to Thailand before the year ends and explore the nearby countries slowly before moving on to Europe next year. I’m hoping Juan will agree for us to sneak in a trip to Cuba and Cancun before embarking on our journey!
Juan: I’m looking forward to experiencing life in Asia. I want to see how people dress, what the different cultures eat, and how the other side of the world looks.
